Councillor Briefing Notes: Community Legacy Program

Program Overview:

Ottawa 150 will be commemorated in association with community-oriented capital projects being completed or initiated in 2005, including one or two major capital projects of City-wide significance, and suitable minor capital projects in each of the City’s wards. Commemorative plaques bearing the Ottawa 150 logo and ceremonies dedicating each project will occur throughout 2005.

Staff will work with Councillors to identify suitable projects that are enduring and accessible to the community, such as parks and recreation projects. Where an appropriate project is not included on the 2005 minor capital works program, one from the 2006 program may be initiated and commemorated.

Criteria:

Projects identified for the Community Legacy Program should be capital projects that are:

• Enduring
• Accessible to the community
• From 2005/2006

There will be no cash equivalent distributed in lieu of plaques if no projects are identified.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Staff

• Staff will prepare a template for the plaques and submit to Councillors by March 31, 2005.

• Staff will identify a supplier for the plaques from whom the Councillors will order the plaques. Standard sizes will be set and communicated.

• Once informed of the time and date of ceremonies, staff will coordinate communications to the community and media, most likely with monthly news releases and/or media advisories and a backgrounder. The information may also be communicated to staff through Corporate Communications and City Briefs.

• Staff will coordinate payment for and mounting of the plaques.

Councillors

• Councillors will identify one project in their ward, using the criteria above, by March 15, 2005. The table on the next pages is a preliminary list of the capital projects collected in October 2004 and may serve as reference.

• Councillors will place the order for the plaque directly with the agreed-upon supplier. The contact information will be sent at a later date.

• Councillors will advise Debra Beauregard of the time and date of the ceremonies for their projects.

• Councillors will organize any ceremonies surrounding the plaque unveiling. A small refreshment budget will be available and communicated at a later date.
