Councillor Briefing Notes: Heritage Day

Program Overview:

The third Monday in February is Heritage Day. Canadians are encouraged to reflect on the achievements of past generations and to celebrate Canada’s unique heritage and history. 

 

The City of Ottawa, in collaboration with the Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa (CHOO), celebrates Heritage Day to highlight Ottawa’s unique history and heritage. Residents are invited to participate in one or more of the many heritage programs, events and projects that are being organized by local community museums, archives, historical societies and heritage groups.

 

2005 is Ottawa’s 150th anniversary and to celebrate, the Heritage Day program is expanded. Mayor Bob Chiarelli will deliver the Official Heritage Day Proclamation and announce details on the following upcoming 150th anniversary events:

·        Tulip Art Festival

·        Tree Planting Program

·        Community Legacy Program

·        Time Capsule Program

 

Vintage Stock Theatre will perform dramatic vignettes depicting historical events of interest with slides depicting the actual events as a backdrop during their performance. Historical costumed characters will circulate in the space and tabletop displays by local historical societies will be set up in Jean Piggott Hall.

 

Schedule:        The Heritage Day program runs from 12:00 – 12:35 p.m. followed by a reception with refreshments.

 

Location:        The Heritage Day program will be presented in Andrew Haydon Hall. The reception will take place in Jean Piggott Hall.
