In the fall of 2015 a sub-committee planned and organized events to help fund one of the newly arrived Syrian families to Ottawa. A Shout Sister choir performance and a Movie Night in April 2016, a Chinese cooking class at T & T Supermarket and a Yoga Class in May 2016, all contributed to the $2,478.95 that we raised and donated to the ‘It Takes a Community’ refugee sponsorship group from Alta Vista and Riverview Park.
On September 7, 2019, in an effort to show support for the ‘Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association’ (FOPLA), the HCCA held a book drive, collecting over 70 boxes of ‘rescued’ materials, that were loaded and driven by a group of determined volunteers to FOPLA’s Book Depot in Nepean on Tallwood Dr. Books deemed suitable by FOPLA were then given to various library branches to sell and raise money for the Ottawa Public Library.
With local artist Claudia Salguero leading the way, this project was initiated, worked on and completed in 2017. Several local residents contributed to the design and painting of this colourful mural that now graces the outside walls of our community centre, fronting on McCarthy Rd and Paul Anka Drive. Again, without Councillor Brockington’s support, this project would not have happened.
